End-to-end encryption
What is encrypted, what cannot be, and what the encryption does not protect.
Messages, calls, photos, files and voice messages are encrypted on the sending device and decrypted on the receiving one, using an open, publicly documented end-to-end encryption protocol. The keys are generated on the devices and never leave them. Our servers carry ciphertext.
What is protected#
The content of what you send. We hold no key that opens it, which is also why we cannot recover a conversation for you and cannot scan conversations for illegal material.
What is not protected#
Encryption hides content, not the fact that a delivery happened. To deliver a message we necessarily handle the sender's and the recipient's addresses and the time. What your account holds lists exactly what that amounts to.
Where encryption ends#
It ends at your screen. Anyone who can unlock your phone can read your messages, and no protocol prevents that. Use a passcode, keep the system updated, and consider disappearing messages for conversations you do not want kept.
