Calls

Calls are end-to-end encrypted, one-to-one and in groups.

How a call connects#

Where the network allows it, the two devices talk directly. Where it does not — behind a strict router, for example — the media passes through a relay we operate. The relay handles the IP addresses of both devices for the duration of the call and cannot open the media. We do not store those addresses after the call ends.

Group calls and call links#

A group can start a call that its members join. A call link can be created and shared; the person who created it can require that people ask to join before they are let in.

Ringing#

The message that rings the other phone is held for 30 seconds if the device is not reachable, and is then discarded.
