Distinguish a network coin from a token and verify contract details before interacting with an unfamiliar asset.
A network coin is native to its blockchain and commonly pays network fees. A token is issued by a contract or protocol on that network and can share a name or symbol with unrelated assets.
Verify a token#
- Confirm the network.
- Confirm the contract address through a trusted project or explorer source.
- Compare decimals and symbol only after the contract matches.
- Treat an unsolicited token as untrusted.
Token balance and fee balance#
Owning a token does not necessarily provide the native asset needed to transfer it. The wallet can show a token balance while a send action remains unavailable because the network fee asset is missing.
Fake value#
A displayed token price or name does not guarantee liquidity, redeemability or legitimacy. Do not sign a contract interaction to claim an unexpected balance.
